Water Damage · What To Do Now

My Carpet Is Soaked — Can It Be Saved?

Whether soaked carpet can be saved comes down to two things: what kind of water it was, and how fast it gets properly dried.

Do This First

Work through these in order — the first few minutes decide how much damage spreads.

  1. 1

Identify the water: clean (supply line), gray (appliance), or black (sewage/flood). Clean water caught fast is the most savable.

  2. 2

Get the water out quickly — the pad underneath holds far more water than the carpet you can feel.

  3. 3

Lift furniture off the carpet (foil or blocks under legs) to prevent stains and rust.

  4. 4

Start airflow, but know the pad usually needs to be pulled or floated to dry the subfloor.

  5. 5

Photograph it for insurance before removing anything.

Careful

What to Avoid

  • Don't assume the surface being dry-ish means it’s dry — the pad and subfloor stay wet for days.

  • Don't try to save carpet soaked by sewage or floodwater — Category 3 carpet and pad generally must go.

  • Don't leave it wet past ~48 hours and expect no mold or odor.

When to Call a Pro

Binnacle can often save clean-water carpet if we’re called quickly — extracting, floating the carpet to dry the pad and subfloor, and treating for odor. For contaminated water, we remove and dispose of it safely and dry the structure underneath.

Common Questions

My Carpet Is Soaked

How long do I have to save wet carpet?

Roughly 24–48 hours for clean water, if extraction and drying start fast. After that, the pad, backing, and subfloor risk permanent damage and mold.

Does the carpet pad always have to be replaced?

Not always for clean water caught early, but pad soaked by gray or black water — or left wet too long — usually has to be removed.

Don't wait it out — water and damage spread.
